Notch Code (2020)
Notch Code, made during the long lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic, was inspired in part by this fragment of writing from the Argentinian writer Borges: “A man sets himself the task of portraying the world. Through the years, he peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, instruments, stars, horses, and people. Shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his face.”
Taking a typological approach, the objects are photographed against a black velvet backdrop, evoking a mysterious environment that could be a museum at night, an archive drawer or an imagined dream-space. The objects speak to our time by way of materials (plastics), design (an I phone cover) and practical applications (an hdmi cable) but with titles that suggest the mythic can be found in the everyday.
